Solo dining at Hix Oyster and Chop House – Happy Hour Hit!

My eating is cheating days are long gone. Hands up anyone else who after the first sip of alcohol thinks: when are we going to eat? I have no time for those monster hangovers, I need food in my belly. The other thing I’ve noticed the older I get is how much I value things I took for granted for so long like my hair! Well, I read somewhere that oysters help hair growth, forget aphrodisiac, if those babies can help my hair grow I will be eating them all year round. Near my 9-5 job I spied a sign saying happy hour oysters and last Friday before heading to the Blisters show at the Print Club London my hair and I sat down to test out this new found knowledge, did I leave looking like Rapunzel?

Location, Location

This location of Hix Oyster and Chop House is tucked away down a side street near Farringdon Station. This is City location with a capital C. I walk past this little street every day on my way home and I spied the sign that made me make a mental note to come back. The space itself doesn’t scream spacious but you and your dining mates can still have a modest if not discreet conversations there.

Good Vibes

Now the welcome at Hix last Friday night was not the most welcoming. I turned up at just after 6pm asking if I could have a seat for oysters. The bar was empty and only three tables taken. I overheard one of the restaurant staff say “we aren’t taking walk ins”. Apparently, this was untrue and I was shown to a table that was in the corner but looked out onto the restaurant so it was ok. I didn’t let it put me off as I had come for oysters and I couldn’t let my hair down plus, I wanted a bit of the happy hour vibe after quite an intense week.

The Food

I came for the oysters and even as the menu was being handed to me I said: “happy hour oysters please”. Yes, I said it just like that. Liquid Marmalade is not shy when it comes to saying what she wants especially if it’s at a bargain price. I was told half a dozen of the Jersey’s and a glass of fizz was £15. Frankly, it didn’t matter which type of oyster was on happy hour special I was having it. Hix knows good oysters: they were big, succulent, juicy with a taste of the sea. I could have eaten a dozen but alas I had somewhere to be and happy hour was over.

Baby In the Corner? I was in the corner but looking out so it was ok…
