Conclave is a masterful thriller with a jaw dropping twist at the end!
Conclave opens with the death of the pope and Cardinal Lawrence (Ralph Fiennes) who is charged with leading the conclave to find the new one. Everyone wants to be the pope but as the story unfolds, each candidate’s failings are exposed.
Conclave is drama done at its finest. A sold story about the process and tradition of electing a new pope and it follows the entire period of the Conclave process with secret and lies revealed during the process.
The attention to detail is stunning; the colours, the way in which they hold their hands, the camera work. An early scene in which the cardinals arrive for the conclave and the procession of the nuns is sumptuous. The tension is held throughout with the jaw dropping twist, for those of us who had not read Thomas Harris’s book, at the end. The writing and direction are what elevates this intimate look at the conclave process. It might have been very dull in the wrong hands.
Ralph Fiennes must surely be on course to win every single award.
