The Book of Clarence is a bonkers modern take about a man who attempts to become the 13th apostle of Jesus. Or, might he actually be the messiah?
We’ve all got used to sanitised and safe filmmaking. The Book of Clarence is subversive and bold and that’s what makes it a refreshing watch. There’s a lot of social commentary woven into this film. I enjoyed the different gaze on the bible stories as well as diverse representation on screen. However, when it did depart from the story that’s when it became a bit aimless.
Jeymes Samuel will get better and hopefully realise that story is as important as narrative. I’m not sure what Clarence wanted in the end because his goal kept changing. The Book of Clarence is entertaining if you are not worried about a coherent storyline.
The Book of Clarence will be released in cinemas in UK and Ireland on 19 January 2024.
